Back on Monday
ijon just called in to say that the prison records show that he's due to be released on Monday, almost a week before the original date. He spoke to his sergeant, trying to figure out if some sort of mistake might have happened, but apparently this is what the computer claimed, and computers, as is known, never errr.

He will probably remain in prison no. 4 until that time, so the contact details published below still hold,

J.

Well, it fits well into absurdist image of Jewish army prison.

Actually, it's the Israeli army prison.

Since Israel is a Jewish state I suppose we can make the assumption ;)

There's a great difference. There're enough non-jews who serve. Anyway, Israel is a Jewish state, yes, but that doesn't make her people "people of the jewish state, and thus - jews".

Not to mention the fact that "Jewish" carries a wealth of different connotations, at least to Israelis. Israel is a secular country, all in all. There are many aspects of Israeli culture that have nothing to do with Judaism, the army being a prime example.
Judaism has enough problems without us attributing it some of the shortcomings of the secular Israeli beaurocratic insensitive inefficient machine that is the army.

Well, let's hope that the same program now assigns him to duty within Isræl proper, so that he isn't just cycled through this again. :-/

I'm curious: why do you use a ligature in "Israel"?

It's nothing peculiar to “Isræl”. I like most of the ligatures which don't now leave people baffled about what word is being written. (I wouldn't want to use the odd things that would now cause people to wonder what word I was trying to write.) I typically write “æsthetic” and “pædophile”. (I also sometimes write “Ægypt” and “œconomics”, when I can get away with it.)

Let's just hope it's not a hoax they're trying to feed him with. Such things have happened.

Well, let's hope that this error will be fixed and he will stay in the prison as long as war with arabs going on. It's safer there.

Is the point to stay in a "safe place"?

(Link)
chadlanin, try thinking otherwise:
"Let's hope" for a viable, negotiated end to the conflict, preferably taking into account both peoples' aspirations for a national homeland.

Israelis of all political stripes want to live free. (It's only the extremists who insist on suppressing the freedoms of others to ensure their own -- though public apathy and sociopolitical dysorganization allows them to get their way.) Unfortunately, under the present circumstances & leadership such-as-it-is, we aren't all that safe. (Note: true for numerous other locations elsewhere in the world as well; ask Donald Rumsfeld et al.)

Nevertheless, let's let ijon get back home and on campus where he belongs, to resume his life (and his free presence among us :-) as he chooses, having gone to the mat on the matter of service in the Occupied Territories.

Well, I belive that actual reason for his descision to go to jail was just very practical : he is safe there, don't have to do anything and have all his time to get ready to his Greek exam. I think youwill agree that it is much better option that to stay on guard 8-10 hours a day and take some chances (not too big, but anyway) to get hurt.

BTW, do you have any arguments to confirm your point of view. Or you just using well known way to deal with the opponent: When you have nothing to say - call opponent stupid and this will solve all problems.
