Three Decisions Born Under Water
And sometimes, the fog lifts, the horizon clears, and decisions turn out to have become possible -- nay, obvious.

I had been unable to choose between my two majors (Classics vs. General Theory of Literature) until now, and consequently did not opt for the accelerated M.A. route that was offered me by the university. I also didn't know whether I want to remain in the groves of Academe or not.

Just now, in the shower, everything became clear. I choose Classics, and I choose to seek a path in academic life. Certainly, whatever I end up doing in Classics would be augmented by stuff I am learning in the GToL Dept., and literature will remain one of my main focuses, but it is now possible to assert that Classics are my true academic love.

Accordingly, in a few months I shall begin my Great Graduate Quest, sifting through prospectuses and brochures, perhaps even practicing my British accent... who knows?

As a bonus, during said shower, it also became vividly apparent that I do want to finally indulge my heretofore-vague yearning for theatrical work, and I am going to seek ways to become involved in theatrical art. This is yet another decision I have not had the resolve to make until now.

Here's to new beginnings!

Well, I should point out that by 'becoming involved with theatrical art' I do not mean 'become an actor'. I have a feeling my prospects lie with the other side of the stage, either in directing or in some textual capacity.

Thanks for the compliment, though!

It's nice to see you've found the true path ;).

You know, there are several highly regarded classics PhD programs in New England. Boston, even.

Um, yeah. True, that. Well, a US PhD is not out of the question either. We shall see. I shall only begin thinking about this concretely in about four months.

Well, everyone keeps saying how obvious it was... It wasn't obvious to me. Really it wasn't!

This is wonderful and truly exciting. As someone who made the same decision a few months ago, I’m happy to hear you finally know were you are aiming to go. As a bystander, watching for the past few years, I think you simply blossomed this past year-year and a half.

who knows, maybe 20 years from now you and I will be sitting in Gilman's cafeteria, complaining about annoying students :)

Thanks!

The past year has been nothing short of wonderful. I blame arnulf and reneighssance.

Oh, and I plan to have my own students, annoying or otherwise, in much less than 20 years. :)

Congrats!
After contemplating on the subject for a long time,
knowing where you're headed must come as a great relief. :)
I know you'll do brilliantly [as I've been saying for years].

Teaching for you is inevitable -- whether it be Classics
or Literature, or whatever, and I think eventually you'll
become one of those lecturer whose courses are always full,
as they are captivating, full of excitements and anecdotes. :)

Also --theatrical art! Yay!
anything that will make you use that voice of yours.

For new beginning it is! :)

Showers are defintly a mind inspiring place... I myself have reached some world conquest decision while washing me-self. Why the fall of Austria was planned while pondering the essence of clean snow water for my people :)

Working on your English accent? - you mean!!!! :O

I never understood the point of spending so much time studying what we call the classics, since how we read them is in any event conditioned by our present culture - there isn't a path to any 'absolute' knowledge of literature, or there wouldn't have been so many different interpretations to each body of text.

Anyway, I recall having asked you once what prompted you to choose classic studies as one of your BA majors. You told me you'd think about it, and we dropped it at that.. I'm still curious about the answer, though.
