Film Recommendation: Das Leben der Anderen - Impressions and Expressions of Ijon
Film Recommendation: Das Leben der Anderen|
Drop everything and go see Das Leben der Anderen
(The Lives of Others; חיים של אחרים). It is poetry.
Addendum, October 2007: A fantastic article by Timothy Garton Ash on this film. [NYRB]Other good films seen lately: Little Children and Little Miss Sunshine.
Current Mood: impressed

Nope. I blinked and it was over.
I put it on my NetFlix list, though..

I got it from NetFlix, and it stood there, scowling at me for a couple of weeks.
I kind of gave up after that. I'm grasping my mental health, trying to hold on TIGHT before it runs away with an overdose of history and ineffectiveness: there is so much in the world that I find intolerable, and so little I can do about most of it!
So I'm going to send the movie back (or let Daniel and Shachaf do so after they watch it; and if they still haven't watched it before I come home from my week of knitting on an island, I'll try and watch it with them.)
The world is progressing in a scary direction. It is no longer confined to a particular country or group of countries - I am feeling a huge drop in the things that matter to me. Some days it is all I can do to get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other. Can a human being get a historical depression, d'ya think?
Knitting (and spinning yarn) is the most comforting thing I do; hanging out with my kids and with Daniel is the other comforting thing. Is this depression? Or realism? Who knows. I'll go knit something...
