A Week in Bretagne
So, in a week or so, my employer is sending me on (my employer's) business to a suburb of Brest (France) called Le Relecq Kerhuon. Got any recommendations for sightseeing etc. in the (greater) area?

I don't know what your purpose there is, but one of the rules of academic conventions is that a convention's prestige equals its academic prestige times location. Nobody wants to go to, say, Novosibirsk to present a paper. (but this example might prove wrong. Let's go with Ohio.).

Brest doesn't sound like a Hi-tech city; To my deprived ears it sounds like a "room with a view".

I remember liking St-Malo many years ago when I backpacked through the region, but can't remember if there's much to do there beyond strolling along the beach. There's Mont-St-Michel, too, which I missed, but is presumably worth a visit.

Mont Saint Michel, Saint Malo, Honfleur.

And don't miss the Bayeux Tapestry - just a few hours' drive into Normandy, and completely unforgettable.

When i visited Bretagne in 2002, i was a stupid little boy and didn't buy myself any books about the local language, although i was educated enough to notice it written on signs here and there. If you have room in your luggage for a dictionary (Breton-English-Breton or Breton-French-Breton) and a grammar book, i'll be very very grateful. I'll pay whatever it costs, of course, and i am sure that you'll find your way in any bookstore.

how wonderful!

Ive not been to that part of france (yet)... been to Laval which isnt that far and that was lovely.

Not sure if you ever picked up on french since the nightmerish teacher we had in Junior-high but there are things to see:
http://www.mairie-brest.fr/cub/tourisme.htm - i dont read french but the pics tell the story in my opinion, and wikipedia for all its faults can be a good filler - see its monuments and tourist attractions section - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brest,_France

have fun!
