Introduction to Homer: Call for Participants
I have decided to host an "Introduction to Homer" seminar. Here are the details:

What

I would like to share the wonder of Homer's epics with some people who have not discovered them yet. I want to focus on getting to know the texts themselves, augmented by ancient and modern Homeric scholarship, and by cultural uses of the epics, e.g. in poetry and literature of the western world.

The seminar is comprised of:
  • A very brief introduction to ancient Greece -- necessary to understand Homer.
  • A brief introduction to Homer and to epic poetry
  • Reading Homer's epics (beginning with the Iliad) together, with background and extra context.

Where

The Flat (my place).

How

I'll give the introductory lectures. The reading will be done from Tschernichowski's masterful Hebrew translation, which each participant must have. We shall read each song together, and discuss it. I'll provide explanations, annotations, and interesting cultural artifacts related to specific things in the epics.
Needless to say, the seminar is free. Refreshments will be provided, and the participants are welcome to help.

When

Once a week, evenings, starting late October or early November. Day of the week to be set by popular vote of participants. I expect participants to be serious about this and make the meetings.

Who

You, perhaps. The seminar is intended for people who do not know Homer's epics. No prior knowledge is required. A few people have already expressed interest, and I'm aiming for a group no larger than 12 people.

Now what?

If you're interested, let me know. If you're not sure you'd like to commit, come to the introductory lectures and then make up your mind.

Welcome!

Any self-respecting bookstore should carry it. Then again, how many self-respecting bookstores do we have here? But it is generally available, in either paperback or hardcover. It's part of his complete works, but sold as a separate volume called "Iliada".

You're okay with לימוד חוכמת יוון, then?

"חוכמת יוון" is Greek philosophy, not poetry.
And I found it on Mitos. I'll buy it after the 15th, to ease the load on this month's credit.

Darn you! I wanna be there.

I want to have a whole social circle, actually, which has a culture of offering classes for one another. Maybe someday I will try to do a formal thing (I'd rather have the culture, but I think the formal thing would be more likely to work) where you can get membership for time-period-x either by paying money or by teaching something, and membership means you can take any of the classes (with the money going to supplies and/or refreshments).

So he did, but I thought he meant the day of the regular meetings.
I didn't get that it includes the intro lecture [as it might include people who will not attend the actual course].

I'm sure Asaf will clear this up when time comes.

I would like to attend if it fits my schedule (as I plan to find a new job as soon as possible). This means I can only come if it is in the later evening (say eightish?) and not on my school nights (wendsday, monday and sunday).

I hope that is not too demending, I find this offer cery exciting!

Your seminar sounds great.
Can complete strangers attend? Or did you mean friends only?
Please let me know.

I'd like to come to the intro session and then decide.

I'm afraid the next few weeks are going to be extremely hectic for me, so I'm not sure I can commit to something like this.
But you sure got me curious about the whole thing.
(Until December, I can't come on Tuesdays.)
