Today I have been informed that I'm on the dean's list (מצטיין דקאן), and additionally that later this month I am to receive a small scholarship from the family of a fallen soldier who had studied at TAU. It would involve participating in the memorial service on the national Memorial Day, and meeting with the soldier's family. It was a pleasant surprise.

Remembering Efi Kaufman

In my [Holocaust heritage] work, sometimes I wonder about the concept of "memory" of something we never knew? So I just went to read about your scholarship's namesake, about the boy and man he was before he became a fallen soldier. Actually, I asked my younger daughter, Nanah, to read it aloud to me.

From his bio, I think what I'll remember most is that he was active in "our" (= my daughters') youth movement, the NOa"L, and gave back to his elementary school. Doing the math, I figured that by your age, he was already in the ground, leaving behind a young widow, a little son, a widowed mother. The stuff of ballads.

Perhaps some time when you feel like celebrating your studies, we can go for a picnic in that thousand-tree forest?
