I found a good epigraph for my paper. Now it's as good as written!

Can I ask you a question?

Seriously, now. What is the virtue of an epigraph -- good one or otherwise? I've never met an epigraph that made me more receptive of the text it headlined, increased my understanding of said text or put it in a better perspective. Other than to show the author's vast knowledge of quotes, what is the virtue of an epigraph?

A good epigraph illuminates the text (a paper in this case), or succinctly states its poetics, or foreshadows its conclusion, and can serve any number of other functions.

If you've never met a good epigraph, I guess you should consider changing your literary diet.

Assuming you're right, I'd be glad to have recommendations.
