A Matter of Terminology
Suggest a good English equivalent for פאדיחה. I want something better than 'embarrassment', more juicy.

allow me to clarify: suggest an English equivalent included in the Oxford English Dictionary.

That's more of a פאשלה, isn't it?

Hmm... yeah.

I guess that leaves messup and screwup out of the question as well.

embarrassing fuck-up?

not sure there is an equivalent word, and if there is one it probably WON'T be found in Oxford
try english slang sites.

blooper might do it, depending on the context.

Yeah, I think blooper is as close as it gets

It's more of a media related term than a social one, but at least it preserves the sense of non-seriousness. Blunder might do better for more formal cases.

From WordNet (r) 2.0 [wn]:

fuckup
2: an embarrassing mistake [syn: {blunder}, {blooper}, {bloomer},
{bungle}, {foul-up}, {flub}, {botch}, {boner}, {boo-boo}]

The prevalence of the B sound is interesting.

I'm partial to mortification myself, and smile at the subtle understatement of faux pas, but take your pick: http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=embarrassment

I have no idea what the original word means, but it sounds from context like "snafu" might fit.

here are two good ones:

(Link)
gaffe =
a clumsy social error; a socially awkward of tactless act; a blatant mistake or misjudgment

flub =
a botch; an embarrassing mistake
(flub is as good a gaffe as fashla, I think)

in england we use Fuckup...
but can also use - Hickup, Blunder and others, but i dont think that any realy hit "spot on" to the word.

could this be another case of:
סתם? - עוד מילה בלי מקבילה אנגלית

I have my favourite (but it's not exact)

(Link)
Fiasco.

It's not exact since it describe the failure and not embarassment. But it has the subtext of a big embarassment in the aftermath. In some ways it's more like "Fashla".

For example, "Fiasco" can describe the Mossad incident in Lilhamer. But it can't describe the Fadiha of two women showing up with the same outfit for a social event (something we men understand absolutely nothing about...).
