St. Mungo's is also a charity for the homeless, but it's perhaps more famous as the name of the hospital (St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries) visited in Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. J. K. Rowling didn't make up Nicholas Flamel, so why would she make up a saint? It might be worth noting that Rowling is married to a doctor who studied at Glasgow.

Always wondered where that name came from...

...as the only namesake I know of (since forever) is another Scot, 18th C. physician, naturalist, and African explorer Mungo Park. I see by his dates he only made it to age 35, by which time he'd apparently managed to accomplish and endure a lot, plus turn out a book that was a popular success in his time and is available even unto this day on amazon.com.

Personally, I'm underwhelmed by the purported qualifications of the multitude of saints. Quite likely I lack the proper background to appreciate them, but meanwhile: give me an African explorer any day. Recommended reading from another naturalist, a century later: Mary Kingsley's "Travels in West Africa" -- this one in skirts.
