How would you characterize Schubert's music? (if you would...)

... as compared with, say, that of his contemporaries?

I'm almost entirely unfamiliar with him/them. If this is something you ever feel like writing about, I'm curious.

Schubert somehow never made it into my repertoire as a performer (symphonic, most likely) nor onto my playlist. Sheer laziness on my part? I'm probably closer to the 19th C than the 20th, so there's a chance. Does he, perhaps, resemble any Baroque composer whose music would likely be familiar to me?

Schubert = good memories

Classical music always reminds me of my childhood and the luminous summer nights at our wonderful summer place in the Eastern Finland. My mother always used to have the classical radio turned on. Schubert gives me only good memories. :)
