I've recently listened to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto, and to parts of his Akhnaten opera. His music, usually considered a mainstay of American minimalist composition, is interesting and aesthetic, to my ears. He makes educated use of repeated melodies, always with subtle differences, and pleasing harmonies. Coupled with a good impression I have of his music based on an album he recorded with Ravi Shankar, my opinion of Glass is very good, and I'll look for other albums of his (I know of the two movie sountracks he composed).
