e-mail is broken
In the past several hours, thousand of people have been offered teenage pornography in an unsolicited e-mail message bearing my personal e-mail address. The message was not actually sent by me, of course, but by evil spammers who stole my identity for the purpose. How do I know? I'm getting hundreds of bounce messages for dead e-mail addresses on the spammers' lists. Why are they doing this? Because they can. E-mail is broken.

Now my address probably made it into several thousand blacklists worldwide. I await redemption by technology.

Happened to me once

Some south-Asian spammer used my domain name in the 'from' field to flood some mailing lists with his preserved meat. He also spammed a mailing list I was trying to get into, which made me look especially bad...

As opposed to open relays and such, which are under the control of the owner, using your email address or domain name in the 'reply-to' or 'from' fields is something that can't be prevented. I'd like to think that spam list maintainers harvest the addresses from the relevant and harder to forge smtp headers and not from these fields. Since I suffered no repercussions from that incident I think this is actually the case.

Still an awful feeling to see your name as the distributor of such crap,
