Arrrgh!
Caught a bad cold. No idea how. Can't sleep. Sneezing so hard my back aches. Nose running. Must go to school tomorrow -- first lessons of four courses, and I don't want to miss the syllabi and logistics. Not to mention missing Prof. Rubin.

Can't concentrate enough to practice Greek. Guilt. Reading another brilliant article by Asaf Inbari. Wish I were dead. [don't panic, this is normal illness verbiage].

Arrrgh.

Current Mood: miserable
Current Music: silence (J's sleeping)

That's not a cold! It's Virgil's revenge!

Gesundheit.

(and beware the jealousy of dead poets)
(for they are powerful and quick to anger)

Hey, I can only do so much at a time... Virgil's day will come, to be sure. Let's see if the group can make it through the Iliad in one piece, then think about the Odyssey, then we'll see.

::grumbles:: Darn Virgil! Serves him right to be stuck with dead Italians in the Inferno.

:-/ I hope you feel better soon. Drink lots of tea and allow yourself to relax. Maybe it's best to miss a day of school as opposed to putting more pressure on yourself which may result in your being sicker. Whatever you decide, take care of yourself!

No time for relaxation, but I did drink a lot of tea. I chose not to miss school, and do not regret it. Tomorrow I get to sleep in a little.

Thanks for the virtual soup! It's heartwarming.

It's an actual improvement

(Link)
Normally when you get the cold, you also get convinced you are about to join the choir invisible. This time you only *wish* you bought the farm. An improvement, says I.

say I. I is the first person, not the third.

Actually, "says I" is better, in context. It's a case of grammar being alive vs. grammar being correct :-)

I find that it only works as a(n ungrammatical) response to the implied challenge "says who?", and never as a standalone utterance, as above.

I beg to disagree.

(Link)
When someone says: "Says who?!?" the response is not "says I!" but "says me!" - which is colloquially appropriate (albeit grammatically horrendous).

(citations http://drspeedbump.8m.com/Atlantic.html or http://www.leomcgarry.net/episode64.html and any American kid you can lay your hands on).

When someone states an opinion, they can qualify it and add "says I" to provide a sense of folksy (rather than booklearned) knowledge to their words.

Re: I beg to disagree.

Yes, I recognize the existence of the folksy form Yossi was using. I merely chose grammar to tease him back for teasing me about my doom-prophesying tendencies during illness. :)

Teases aside, I don't much care for "says I", but it's a matter of taste.

Indeed, a matter of taste.

(Link)
And I respectfully submit that "folksy" is not the word I'd be most likely to connect to you (visions of plaid shirts and denim cover-alls, moose heads /mounted/ on general store walls, and an overabundance of facial hair... ...folksy. Not your type at all.)
